City of Southlake

Zip Code Change Update

The United States Post Office recently approved a zip code change for certain residents who reside in the City of Southlake yet retain a Roanoke zip code.

More than 300 letters were sent from the Post Office to the affected residents.  While responses came in both for and against the change, a strong majority of residents were in favor of switching to the Southlake, 76092 zipcode.  If you have questions about the process and when the change will officially take place, please call Ben Thatcher (Assistant to the City Manager) at 817-748-8005.  Below are some of the questions which were asked during two SPIN which were held on the subject in late 2006.

Q- What is in it for the City if a zip code change is made?

A- There are no substantive benefits to the City of Southlake if a zip code change is made.

Q- What are the benefits to the residents if a change is decided upon?

A- The benefits of a zip code change differ from resident to resident.  However here are some of the changes that might occur should the post office allow a zip-code change

Q- What negative impacts could we expect to see if a zip code change is made?

A- If a zip code change is granted then you should expect a small delay in your mail processing.  This effect could be mitigated if the property owner is willing to notify all creditors, etc. about the mailing address change.

Q- My insurance agent told me a zip code change could increase my insurance premiums: True?

A- According to the Texas Department of Insurance there is no standard methodology used within the State to assess insurance premiums.  It is very likely that each insurer may be using a different methodology (i.e. based on zip code, county, or city), and so it would depend upon the insurer to which you hold policies.  Affected property owners should contact their insurance agent for more details on how this change might affect their premiums.  If you feel like your insurer is unwilling to provide you assistance with this unique scenario then you are welcome to lodge a complaint with the Texas Department of Insurance so that they can look into how your provider charges premiums.  You can do this by logging on to their website or by calling their consumer hotline at 800-252-3439.

Q- If a zip code change is asked for and a certified survey is sent out, who can vote on this issue?

A- Only those Southlake property owners who have a Roanoke mailing address were sent a certified survey.

Q- What will happen with my FED-EX and UPS service once the zip code is changed?

A- A change in the zip code should not affect services provided by FED-EX and UPS.  According to both carriers the City will just need to inform the regional shipping offices of the change.

Q- How will this affect emergency response such as 911, police, fire etc.?

A- According to the Southlake Fire Department and the County 9-1-1 Districts a zip code change will not impact emergency responses.

Q- If we change our zip code, will it change where we are registered to vote?

A- No it will not.  Voter registrations are determined by county residence.

Q -Will my home value be affected in any way by a zip code change?

A- The Tarrant County Appraisal District and the Denton County Appraisal District do not assess home valuations based on zip codes.
