Proclamation - National Day of Prayer
Whereas, the Continental Congress passed a declaration for a National Day of Prayer in 1775. Such days of prayer have been part of our Country's foundational heritage; and,
Whereas, the National Day of Prayer was established by an act of the United States Congress in 1952 and signed by President Truman as an official annual observance. In 1988, the National Day of Prayer was set aside by the U.S. House, Senate and President Reagan as the first Thursday of every May; and,
Whereas, May 1, 2008 has been officially designated by Congress as a National Day of Prayer. Through prayer, our faith is strengthened, our hearts are humbled, and our lives are transformed; and,
Whereas, the citizens of Southlake will gather across barriers of race and denomination to come together to pray on this day and to proclaim our trust in God for the welfare of our community; now,
Therefore, I, Andy Wambsganss, Mayor of the City of Southlake, on behalf of the City Council, do hereby proclaim May 1, 2008, as National Day of Prayer.
