Senior Activity Center History

In 1998, Gail Eubanks, the first mayor of Southlake, donated his former home to the City to be used as Southlake's first Senior Activity Center. But before the Senior Center was opened, the house was remodeled and expanded including the addition of a back patio and a large parking lot. Approximately 100 volunteers donated their time, talent and materials and transformed the home into a gathering place where mature adults can meet, socialize, learn new things and gather information.
Over the years, utilization of the center has grown and flourished from "10 regular participants" to a membership of 350. And with this increase of members, the need for more activities and senior resources grew as well.
Today, the Senior Center offers a variety of activities for the mind, body and spirit including: For the body we offer three exercise classes per week taught by a licensed physical therapist. For the mind we offer lectures and classes taught by professional in the community. Some of the past lectures included: "How to Protect Yourself from Cons, Scams and Fraud"; "How To Slow the Decline of Memory" and "Arthritis of the Hand". Some of the past lecturers include a lieutenant from the Southlake Police Department, physicians and school teachers. For the spirit we offer fun and exciting trips including monthly trips to plays, lunches at popular restaurants and trips to Washington, D.C., Branson, Missouri, and Canada.
The 10th Anniversary of the Southlake Senior Activity Center will be celebrated on Tuesday, May 13, 2008. To commemorate this mile stone in the history of Southlake, we invite the mature adult citizens of Southlake and the surrounding communities to this Celebration Luncheon and Open House on Tuesday, May 13, 9:30 AM to 2:00 PM. The celebration will be held at the Southlake Senior Activity Center, 307 Parkwood Dr., Southlake, Texas. For more information, please call the Southlake Senior Center at 817-748-8315.
