eAudiobooksYou can download up to ten eAudiobook items directly to your personal computer for playback using Windows Media Player or a portable listening device. Once you have reached the checkout limit, you cannot download additional eAudiobook items until a currently downloaded eAudiobook automatically expires. An eAudiobook item automatically return to your library when the checkout period expires and you can no longer access the item from your personal computer or portable listening device.
LicensesNetLibrary uses Windows Media Rights Manager v2.x to create licenses that allow protected content to be played on PCs and portable listening devices. This is also the technology that allows checked out items to expire on a due date and to be renewed.
NetLibrary eAudiobooks cannot be played on systems running Macintosh operating systems. The latest version of Windows Media Player for Macintosh is based on Windows Media Rights Manager version 1.3, which does not offer the essential functionality of the 2.x versions. They cannot be played on iPods, either. iPods use the .aac file format, which does not support the required Digital Rights Management (DRM) protection.
Playing or transferring an eAudiobook requires a license. The license automatically downloads the first time you open the eAudiobook file from your computer, giving you access to the eAudiobook for the checkout period. The license also allows you copy the eAudiobook file to two additional portable listening devices. You must be connected to the Internet and you may have to login to acquire the license for the eAudiobook file. Once you have a license, you no longer need to be connected to the Internet or logged in to listen or transfer an eAudiobook.
Note: If Windows Media Player shows acquiring license, but eventually you get a message that you don't have a license to play the eAudiobook, you may need to download a newer version of Windows Media Player.
Listening to eAudiobooks on a computerOne of the following media players is required to listen to an eAudiobook on a computer:
· Microsoft Windows Media Player v9 or higher
· Musicmatch Jukebox v8.2 or higher
· Nullsoft Winamp v5 or higher
Compatible portable listening devicesPortable listening devices like mp3 players must support playback of large secure or protected wma files, and must have a storage capacity of at least 256 MB, since the average CD quality eAudiobook file size is 140 MB.
Devices that support bookmarking allow you to designate a place within a file and return to that place. Some devices limit time tracking to a pre-defined period of time and often eAudiobook files may be longer than the pre-defined period in the device. In this case, the complete length of the file will not be shown in the device. Devices that support full time stamping do not limit the time tracking of a file in any way and will allow the full length of an eAudiobook file to display.
A list of tested players compatible with NetLibrary eAudiobooks is available at http://support.oclc.org/Resolutions/TestedPlayers.pdf. Each player has been tested for the features and functionality recommended above. This is not a comprehensive list, but is provided as an example of players and functionality that might be of interest.
