Operation Identification

Operation Identification is a program designed for homeowners or business owners to deter theft and assist in recovery of stolen property. The program includes marking property with a drivers license number & maintaining an inventory of valuables.

Operation Identification is a property marking program that has been successful in reducing or eliminating burglary and theft in communities where it has been properly implemented. The program is based on the premise that items that are difficult for a thief to sell are less likely to be stolen.

It is easy to participate in Operation Identification and costs you nothing but a little time.

  1. FIRST, list all your valuable property on an inventory form provided by your insurance company, the police department, or one you make up on your own. The important part is to record the make, model and serial numbers of anything that has serial numbers. Don’t forget to record the numbers of all your credit cards as well.
  2. SECOND, engrave your driver's license number on any large items of property such at televisions, VCRs, camcorders, and cameras; for jewelry, take close up photographs. Consider videotaping your inventory and saving the tape or disk for future reference.
  3. THIRD, display the Operation Identification stickers on your windows to warn the potential thief that your property has been marked for ready identification by law enforcement.

Keep the inventory of property, as well as photos or tapes/disks of valuables, in a secure location with other important papers. If you are the victim of a property crime, this information will be integral in law enforcement recovering your property and in submitting a claim to your insurance company.
