School Resource Officers
School Resource Officers (SROs) work in public schools as a security presence while fostering a better relationship between students and law enforcement.
Several Police Officers are assigned to the School Resource Officer (SRO) program. These officers serve in the Senior High, High School, and Middle Schools. These officers are not only a police presence on campuses; they serve as teachers, mentors, and a community resource to parents, students, and faculty members.
The School Resource Program puts police inside secondary schools, building rapport as students see the SRO not only as law enforcement but as a person who cares for them. SROs assist faculty and staff, while helping students make positive choices for their lives.
Officers assigned to the SRO program receive specialized training in dealing with issues specific to school campuses and work closely with school administrative teams. SROs also train in juvenile law, crisis intervention, drug and alcohol abuse, and mental health related issues. The officers' presence has made a positive impact on the campuses, as well as the community. It is not uncommon for former students to seek out SROs years later and tell them how that officer changed the course of the lives for the better.
