What We Do
Our role in the community is to ensure high quality development that adheres to the city’s Southlake 2030 comprehensive plan, as well as meets guidelines and regulations in city ordinances and laws of the State of Texas. This includes residential and commercial properties, public facilities, open spaces, as well as overall land use within the city.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Make recommendations to City Council on matters concerning zoning and site plans, public improvements, civic improvements, street changes, the routing of public utilities, and strategic planning.
  • Make recommendations to City Council regarding updates or amendments to the city’s Master Plan, which guides growth, development, beautification and infrastructure for its citizens. The Commission’s responsibility for the Master Plan is to have a planning horizon addressing at least ten years in the future.
  • Review and make recommendations to City Council on development of property.
  • Review and make recommendations to City Council on platting of property.
  • Consider and hold public hearings when required on development and land use issues.

The Planning and Development Services Department provides staff support to the Planning and Zoning Commission.

Meeting Times
Planning & Zoning Commission meetings are held the first and third Thursday of each month (following the first Tuesday) at 6:30PM at Southlake Town Hall. The Planning and Zoning Commission agenda is available on the City’s agenda page. City staff reports on the cases being considered by the Planning and Zoning Commission can be found on the Development Activity News

A work session is held prior to the 6:30 PM Planning and Zoning Commission meeting in the Executive Conference Room (2nd floor - Town Hall) and are open to the public. The starting times for the work session varies depending on agenda length. Please check the Planning and Zoning commission agenda for the work session start time.
Who We Work With
Most everyone seeking to develop a property in Southlake must first appear before the Planning & Zoning Commission, before going to City Council to receive entitlement to develop or redevelop properties. As part of this process, we also welcome input from citizens, business owners, neighborhood groups and community organizations on a proposed development case. Input can be provided in writing, email or by attending the meeting to speak on the matter.
