Keep Southlake Beautiful Recycling Program

Christmas Tree Recycling
Don't throw away your real Christmas tree! Instead, recycle it! By recycling your tree, you save valuable landfill space and real Christmas trees are biodegradable, which means they can be easily reused or recycled for mulch and other purposes. The City of Southlake will turn the trees into wood chips. Just drop your bare tree (no decorations or bases please) at Bicentennial Park (450 West Southlake Boulevard) and the City will do the rest!
If you have questions please call (817) 748-8203.

Leaf Recycling
PROGRAM DETAILS
The City of Southlake Keep Southlake Beautiful program and Duncan Disposal is pleased to offer a third round of curbside leaf recycling this winter. The Leaf Recycling Program gives citizens the opportunity to place their bagged leaves on the curb and have them picked up for recycling rather than ending up in the landfill. During the last two Leaf Recycling Programs, Southlake residents put green in their routine, exceeding expectations. Through the course of the two years, Southlake residents bagged and recycled over 360 tons of leaves!
It is important to participate in this program because the leaves that accumulate in and around a landscape represent a valuable natural resource that can be used to provide landscaped areas with a good source of organic matter and nutrients.
This year, the City of Southlake challenges residents to continue to put green in their routine and exceed the 170 tons of leaves that were recycled last year!
2011 Curbside Leaf Pickup Dates:
- 2011 Curbside Leaf Pickup Information coming soon!
To participate:
- Place bagged leaves at the curb no later than 7:00 a.m. on designated collection days.
- Bagged leaves should be placed at the curb physically separated from other solid waste.
- Any type of bag may be used.
DID YOU KNOW . . .
During the year, at least 20% of the solid waste generated by Texans comes from grass clipping, tree leaves and other landscape wastes. Of the landscape waste, approximately half is composed of tree leaves.
Bagging leaves and placing them into the curbside garbage collection system uses valuable landfill space, removes nutrients from the environment and costs cities and the people of Texas more in increased taxes and service fees. The tree leaves that accumulate in and around a landscape represents a valuable natural resource that can be used to provide a good source of organic matter and nutrients for use in a landscape.
Leaves contain 50 - 80% of the nutrients a plant extracts from the soil and air during the growing season. In forests, pastures and other natural settings, tree leaves and other organic wastes from a natural carpet over the soil surface which conserves moisture, moderates temperature and prevents soil erosion and crusting.
Cell Phone and Ink Recycling
Every day, tons of materials are taken to landfills that could be given new life if reused properly. Consider recycling or reusing rather than throwing away cell phones and ink catridges. Bring your old cell phones and used ink catridges to the Community Services Department to be recycled.
Cell Phones: Keep Southlake Beautiful takes old cell phones for donation to be refurbished for charities. These goes to those who need them most to keep in contact with their families and other important people.
Ink Cartidges: Keep Southlake Beautiful recycles ink catridges to be refilled and distributed to other printers. This helps keep the catridges out of the landfills and puts them into homes that need them.
