Volunteer Services in Police and Fire

The Police and Fire Departments enjoy working with our citizen volunteers. Their time and dedication to our agency is invaluable; and the relationships and friendships that are created are irreplaceable.

The first step in being able to volunteer with the Police or Fire Departments is to complete the Southlake DPS Citizens Academy.

What is Citizens Academy?

Citizens Academy is designed to provide members of the community with a working knowledge of the Police and Fire Departments. Academy graduates gain valuable insight into each department while having fun and meeting new people.

How long is the Citizens Academy?

Classes meet once a week for approximately 10 weeks from 7:00 pm - 9:30 pm. Two class activities are scheduled on a Saturday from 9:00 am - 1:00 pm.

At the conclusion of Citizens Academy, members participate in a graduation ceremony. Successful completion is simply your attendance in the classes, there are no mid-terms or final exams!

Once you complete the Citizens Academy, graduates are invited to continue volunteering in the Police or Fire Departments. Please visit our Volunteer Opportunities page for additional ways you can offer your time and assistance to the departments.

When is Citizens Academy offered?

Academy is offered once a year, beginning in early September.

What classes are offered in the Citizens Academy?

Citizens attending the academy learn about fire and police operations and perform many hands-on activities that include:
  • Weapons demonstrations at the firing range
  • Participation in a controlled burn
  • Use of police and fire equipment
  • Fingerprinting
  • Ride Out with a police officer and firefighter
